Senate Democrats united against Boehner debt plan (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Senate Democrats are telling Republicans controlling the House that there's no way they'll support a GOP plan to lift the federal debt limit that's emerging in the House.

The development came as every Senate Democrat and two independents signed a letter to House Speaker John Boehner (BAY'-nur) promising to oppose the GOP plan because it could mean another risk of government default next year and force cuts to programs like Medicare.

The letter was issued on the eve of a House vote on Boehner's plan, which would cut spending by more than $900 billion over a decade.

Boehner hopes the Senate will accept his measure as a deadline nears for Congress to raise the government's borrowing authority. But the letter cements the GOP plan's demise in the Senate.
