XX14i Review From Orion SkyQuest

The Orion SkyQuest xx14i is an incredible telescope. The 14" dobsonian's aperture is truly vast giving you mind blowing vistas of the night sky. You'll see spectacular gas clouds, imposing elliptical galaxies and even highlights in the eye of Jupiter. For special functions such as a solar eclipse where your telescope will be on display, the Orion SkyQuest XX14i will be sure to impress.

What makes the SkyQuest 14" unique is that it comes with a built-in computer to aid in viewing the sky. This encoder has more than 14,000 pre-selected objects to narrow in on. After you type in the coordinates of the sights you want to see, crank the dials on the XX14i until the two digits are brought down to 0.0. Then look through the dobsonian at your object of choice.

As an excellent second or third dobsonian, the Orion SkyQuest XX14 Intelliscope is an excellent decision. Its incredible diameter is only matched by its vast panoramas, and having your coordinates already dialed in by the on-board computer will ensure you see fantastic sights on your first night out.

Most pro astronomers who consider purchasing the SkyQuest 14" are also looking at a few of the other higher end products from the SkyQuest series. The 14" GoTo telescope is a huge improvement on the Intelliscope and is an incredible scope from the SkyQuest brand. The 14" GoTo has 42,000 details in its circuits as opposed to only 14,000 found in the XX14i, and the GoTo is totally motorized from its computer. But the motorized 14" is also a few hundred dollars more than the 14" Intelliscope which makes the mechanized telescope unavailable to astronomers who are OK with a scope that can track details without a motorized system.

Many who like the price tag of the XX14i but who are serious about astrophotography usually end up picking up a smaller telescope, the XX12g. Not only is this telescope totally motorized, but it is also price tagged similarly to the 14" Intelliscope. While the 12" goes for in excess of $1900 with the GoTo system, the XX14i has a price tag of around $1800 without.

The bottom line is this: if you can't spend more than $2000 and you're leaning towards astrophotography, you should consider purchasing the 12" GoTo. Otherwise, the Orion SkyQuest 14 with Intelliscope is a top telescope that will stay a favorite for years to come.
