My Advice for High School Students - The 7 Steps to More Confidence and Success

I don't know about all of you that are reading this, but when I was about to enter High School, there were feelings of both excitement and fear going on in my head at the same time. Excitement for all the new experiences and people who awaited me and the fear of not fitting in and being accepted by my peers once I got there.

I lived in a small town on the California coast about 110 miles south of San Francisco from the time I was about 2 years old until the end of fourth grade. I returned to the area just before High School started and was full of anticipation, to be reuniting with old friends and meeting new friends. There was also that feeling of being a small young tadpole in a seemingly large pond surrounded by much larger and scarier critters.

What got me through High School successfully and at the same time feeling more confident about the future are these 7 steps that I would like to share with you:

1. Do what feels right, in your heart and in your mind.

2. If someone is trying to befriend you and you have a bad feeling about it, don't close the door on the relationship but be very careful and ask them a lot of questions; don't follow others down a path that you make you feel uneasy because deep down inside of you it's not the right thing to do. It's o.k. to take a stand and say no. If they try to pressure you, they are not true friends, time for you to move on, your true friends will find you and you'll know it when that happens.

3. Ask a lot of questions, be it with your friends or in class, knowledge is power, or at least it makes you surer of yourself which will build your confidence in time.

4. Set goals early in high school and follow them. Take time to explain what you want to achieve with your parents and or with your school counselor, don't be afraid to ask for help, this is a sign of strength not weakness.

5. Each semester try one class or club or sport that is out of your comfort zone, be opened minded about the results and don't worry if it doesn't work for you, by just trying something different your confidence will become stronger.

6. Surround yourself with people you can trust, this can take time but when you find those special people who you can honestly share your deepest feeling with and accept their feedback in a positive way your confidence will skyrocket because you know your friends have your back.

7. Never stop learning! This has been a key for me throughout my life, I have always loved to read success stories and how I can be a better person in society, my greatest growth is when I can share what knowledge I have with someone else.

These 7 steps have helped me get through many ups and downs during my high school years and beyond, give them a try, and see what kind of results take place for you.
