Chevy Sonic owners come back to the brand 60 percent of the time.

Experian Automotive's quarterly Loyalty and Market Trend analysis was released on Monday, and Toyota was in the top spot, with 47.3 percent of owners returning for another car. GM came in second at 46.2 percent while Ford was right behind at 46 percent.

As for brand loyalty, which is defined by Experian as owners of a specific model whose next purchase was from the same brand, the Chevy Sonic won top honors. Its owners came back to the Chevy dealership 60.3 percent of the time.

?What this implies is that Sonic owners are pleased with the car, so on their next new vehicle purchase, 60 percent purchased another Chevrolet vehicle,? Jeffrey Anderson, director of consulting and analytics for Experian Automotive told Forbes. ?We see this sometimes with new vehicle launches, that buyers of those vehicles are loyal to the brand for their next purchase. This occurred with vehicles such as Kia Forte, Chevrolet Cruze, and Ford Fusion.?

Next on the brand loyalty list was the Ford Fusion at 59.9 percent, the Flex at 56 percent and the Edge at 55.1 percent. Ford took six of the top 10 spots.

Toyota and Chrysler both gained market share over the second quarter of 2011. Ford and GM lost market share, as did Hyundai Nissan and Honda.

The average age of the vehicles on the road went up again in 2012, which continues the trend that started in 2008. That year the average vehicle age was 9.8 years old while in 2012 the average car is 10.8 years old.

In 2009 new-car purchases dropped 1.3 million vehicles, a decrease of about 34 percent. Purchases have been increasing since then, but still haven't hit the 2008 high of 3.8 million.
