Surge in breast cancer cases in Asian women, say Manchester experts

The number of Asian women being struck by breast cancer is soaring, according to Manchester experts.

Doctors at the Nightingale Centre and Genesis Prevention Centre, based at Wythenshawe hospital, say they have seen a rise in the number of British Asian women diagnosed with the disease over the past year.

The problem has increased so much that they are launching Britain?s first breast cancer support group for Asian women.

Prof Anil Jain, consultant radiologist at Wythenshawe hospital, believes the rise is because of a growing trend for Asian women to adopt western lifestyles.

He said: "We hope this support group will help to promote breast screening among the UK?s Asian community, improve their breast cancer awareness and help change cultural attitudes towards breast cancer.

"Above all, by improving this situation, we hope to save lives."

The centre is now carrying out clinical trials to determine exactly why the increase is occurring ? and to find out why some Asian women are developing cancer at an earlier age than other ethnic groups.

The support group, backed by the Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Appeal ? Britain?s only charity entirely dedicated to the prevention of the disease, will offer the chance for women to talk about their experiences with other patients and survivors. It will be launched at the centre on Friday.

Prof Jain said attitudes to treatment often vary between Asian women and the group will allow them to discuss any concerns with experts.
