Are Fancy Goldfish Still Goldfish? - Edd's Home Fish Care - Yes

?
???
??

The simple answer to this is yes.? Goldfish, Carassius auratus auratus,?and their fancy varieties all share the same common ancestry.? Around 1600 years ago when carp were farmed in China, the fish farmers noticed some fish developed gold colouration.? These were then intensly bred to what we have as the common goldfish.? Breeders then?developed different strains of fancy finnage and colourations.

?
It was?commonly thought that the Crucian Carp, Carassius carassius, was the ancester.? However, recent research has identified that the common ancester is most likely to be the Prussian Carp, Carassius gibelio.

Though within the aquarium, I would regard the common goldfish and the fancy relatives as two different pets.? The common goldfish is commonly known to be a hardy and easy pet to keep (along with the owner responsibily managing the water quality).? However, the fancier versions due to delicate finnage and out of proportion body shapes makes them a much more difficult and fragile?pet to keep.? As with all fish, make sure you have researched them before purchasing.
