Apple releases iOS 5 battery life fix to cure what ails your iPhone (Yahoo! News)

If you found yourself staying close to a power outlet after the last update, help is here today!

We knew it was en route, but Apple has just released a minor software fix for devices running on the company's latest mobile software, iOS 5. After iOS 5's somewhat rocky launch, many iPhone owners saw their normally top-notch battery life take a plunge. Apple acknowledged the issue on November 2, and the update is rolling out to users over the course of the day.

Along with the bringing your battery life up to speed, the update (known as 5.0.1) gives the original iPad the multitouch gestures that were introduced to the iPad 2 with the iOS 5 update. As with many of these intermediate software updates, iOS 5.0.1 sews up a few known?security loopholes, including a vulnerability that could allow anyone to access a password-protected iPad 2 using one of Apple's own Smart Covers.

To install the update, you shouldn't need to connect your device to your computer this time around, thanks to the wonders of iOS 5. Follow these steps for update 5.0.1:

  1. Connect to a wifi network (the update won't work over 3G)
  2. Open the settings menu on your iOS device.
  3. Tap General then Software Update
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to install update 5.0.1
