Not only are noises such as those from heavy equipment, firearms etc. problematic, but also noise from portable music devices, such as ipods, iphones or other MP3 players can be quite harmful, especially when these are used in conjunction with earbuds or headphones etc. This is especially true if music is played loudly for long periods of time. Even with short durations, very loud noise can be harmful to the ears. You may have experienced your ears ringing for a while after attending a very loud concert for example. Luckily, such ringing in the ears caused by short-term exposure to sound usually goes away in a bit. Long-term exposure to loud sound, however, can cause damage that persists over time.

Sensory or Neural Damage: One of the most common causes of ringing in the ears is damage to the microscopic endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Such impairment sometimes occurs with advancing age.
