Tinnitus, or ringing in ears, buzzing in ears, humming in ears, bothers more people than you may imagine. Almost 50 million people in the U.S. are affected by it. So if you are experiencing any such symptoms, you are certainly not alone!
In many cases, the specific causes of tinnitus are not known. However, I will list here some of the more common causes.
Earwax blockage: Many of you may not know that a certain amount of earwax is good for your ears ? that?s why your body produces it! Earwax protects the ear canal by trapping dirt. It also slows the growth of bacteria. However, an excess of earwax may be harmful. When too much earwax collects, the body cannot eliminate it naturally. Such excess accumulation can cause irritation of the eardrum, which can sometimes lead to tinnitus.
Exposure to loud noise: Loud noises are harmful to ears. Not only are noises such as those from heavy equipment, firearms etc. problematic, but also noise from portable music devices, such as ipods, iphones or other MP3 players can be quite harmful, especially when these are used in conjunction with earbuds or headphones etc. This is especially true if music is played loudly for long periods of time. Even with short durations, very loud noise can be harmful to the ears. You may have experienced your ears ringing for a while after attending a very loud concert for example. Luckily, such ringing in the ears caused by short-term exposure to sound usually goes away in a bit. Long-term exposure to loud sound, however, can cause damage that persists over time.
Sensory or Neural Damage: One of the most common causes of ringing in the ears is damage to the microscopic endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. Such impairment sometimes occurs with advancing age.
Meinere?s disease, and side effect of some medications, etc., are some of the much less common causes of tinnitus.
