Erik Slivka at MacRumors, as well as ifostore, a site that covers Apple's retail operations, both say they're heard about this plan. We asked around, but didn't hear anything.
We don't know if this accurate or not, but it sure seems like a terrible idea. It seems like something cooked up by corporate types in a land far removed from the average employee. It seems like one of those things where people in were in a boardroom and said, "How do we fix maps? I know, we'll make our thousands of retail employees do more work."
If Apple wants to fix maps it has to crack open the vault, take out a sliver of the $100 billion it has in cash and pay thousands of contractors who travel all over the world providing mapping data. That's what Google does and it's working pretty well.
