Wikipad gaming tablet to come soon with Jelly Bean and quad-core ...

Although it looked like vaporware back at the CES in January, when it was unveiled for the first time, it seems like the WikiPad Android gaming tablet, is in fact, as real as they come and is gearing up for an imminent release.

However, the 8-incher from back then has undergone a bunch of serious changes, both cosmetic and technical, some of them making it far more intriguing.

First off, the Wikipad tablet/gaming console is an 8-incher no more and will come with a more generous 10.1-inch IPS display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and 1280 x 800 pixels resolution. Even though we welcome the bump in the screen?s diagonal size, the new panel is set to come with a far less impressive resolution than the 8-incher from back January (announced as having an out of this world 1920 x 1080 pix res).

The manufacturers have also put the 3D capabilities of the tablet?s panel on hold for the time being, but it?s very likely that future Wikipad tablets (if there?ll be any) will in fact be 3D-enabled.

In terms of pure speed, the Wikipad won?t break any barriers, but it should do a decent enough job even for a hardcore gamer. The 10-incher will therefore be powered by a 1.4 GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 T30 processor, a 520 MHz GPU, and 1 GB of DDR2 RAM. Sure, we would have preferred to see 2 gigs of RAM under this gadget?s hood (or at least 1 gig of DDR3), but hopefully the manufacturers made this compromise to keep the tablet?s price down.

A welcomed change made to Wikipad?s spec sheet from that announced in January is surely the on-board storage space bump. The tablet was initially planned to come with only 8 GB of internal memory, but now is set to have ?at least? 16 GB. There?s a strong possibility for the 10-incher to even come with 32 GB of storage space, according to official statements.

The rest of the Wikipad?s specs and features are more than decent too, and include dual 8 MP/2 MP cameras, and a 23.46 Wh battery supposedly capable of running for six hours of continuous gaming. The tablet won?t disappoint in terms of software either, as it should ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on board.

In terms of design, things have slightly changed from what we saw six months ago, but the general idea is the same. The 10-incher weighs only 560 grams (by itself), measures a mere 8.6 mm in thickness, and will come with an included controller add-on. This connects to the actual slate with a proprietary connector, and looks pretty similar to the Xbox 360 controller. It features two triggers and analog sticks, four face buttons, two bumpers, a couple of start/select buttons, as well as a directional pad. These all seem pretty sleek, well placed and spaced, but, of course, there?s no way to tell how they?ll behave in reality.

Unfortunately, Wikipad (the company) hasn?t revealed anything about their product?s exact release or pricing details just yet. However, we do know that the 10-incher is coming before the end of 2012, which means it will probably undercut the launch of one of its most important future competitors, the Ouya Android-based console. Now if only the Wikipad were to be decently priced?

What the Olympics Can Teach Us About Franchising >> Franchise ...

The world?s best, strongest, fastest, and most talented athletes are competing for personal glory on the world?s most public stage: the Olympic Games. Behind the fanfare, sponsorships, and medals lie years of hard work, sacrifice, and standing on the shoulders of your supporters.

?

As a franchisee, your business is your Olympics. While you may not find yourself on a podium decorated with a bronze, silver, or gold medal at the end of each day, your customers, employees and franchisors are judging your performance.

?

The Importance of Passion

Take a page out of an Olympic athlete?s book: passion is paramount. How else could you dedicate 20 years of your life, as Michael Phelps has, to hours and hours of training? To not watching your favorite television show? To not ordering dessert? The only time that sacrifice doesn?t feel sacrificial is when what you stand to gain is greater than what you are forgoing. That, and when what you?re doing still feels like fun.

?

Olympic athletes are often quoted pre-and-post event on the importance of, ?going out and having fun.? Without some semblance of fun, the hours in the gym, pool, or at your business, would be unbearable. That?s why when choosing a franchise concept it?s important to be truly interested in or passionate about the business you?re about to buy into. Franchise agreements are written in terms of years. Most are between 10 and 25 years. Can you imagine doing something you don?t really like for so long?

?

What It Means to Be a Part of Something Larger Than Yourself

?

There?s something to be said for being a part of something larger than yourself. Recognizing your place as part of the whole (as opposed to the whole) can be humbling and empowering.

?

As a business or franchise owner your importance is obvious. Without you there wouldn?t be jobs for your employees or services and products for your customers. Then again, if it weren?t you it would be somebody.

?

Embracing this reality and mentality can make you a better manager and franchisee. When you accept that your role, while important, exists only thanks to your franchisor, your customers and your employees, it?s easier to be more appreciative of how your business truly works.

?

Furthermore, realizing your place in something bigger serves as a reminder that you are responsible to and accountable for others?an important inspiration for staying true to your endeavors when you lose sight of your goals. Perhaps this is why Olympians become so overwhelmed with emotion; they see they represent more than just themselves.

?

The Importance of Support and Guidance

Regardless of what you may believe, we all stand on the shoulders of those who have come before us?and thank goodness for it! The experience and knowledge of others is invaluable whether you are an Olympic athlete or a franchisee.

?

Can you imagine going to the Olympics without the guidance or tutelage of a coach? Can you imagine becoming a business owner without support from your family or friends? As a franchisee, you not only have the support of your friends and family, you have the support of a network of franchisees and franchise support systems designed to make you and keep you successful! While your personal and financial preparation is your responsibility, you are not without resources or guidance.

Investors Seeking Higher Yields Find Subprime Auto Loans Attractive

?Sales of bonds tied to payments on subprime?car loans?are accelerating at the fastest pace in five years as investors seek high yields amid speculation the?Federal Reserve?will keep interest rates at record lows until mid-2015.

Led by Santander Consumer USA, issuance of $10 billion this year in asset-backed debt linked to vehicle loans to borrowers with spotty credit records compares with $8.2 billion in the same period of 2011, according to Barclays Plc. Top-ranked securities backed by the loans yield between 15 and 25 basis points more than benchmark swap rates, versus 5 to 8 basis points for similar debt of prime borrowers, Deutsche Bank AG data show.?

London 2012: China's Ye Shiwen staggered the world ? even Ryan Lochte

The morning after the night before there was only one name on everybody's lips. It was not Ryan Lochte or Michael Phelps. In fact it was exactly the same person those two had been talking about themselves: Ye Shiwen. The 16-year-old, born and raised in Hangzhou out on the east coast of China, became the first swimmer to break a world record at these Olympics when she knocked more than a second off the time that won Steph Rice gold back in Beijing in 2008. And Rice had the advantage of swimming in a polyurethane suit, of the kind long since banned by the sport's governing body, Fina. It was not just Ye's speed, or her age, that was so staggering ? it was the manner of her victory.

After 300m of fly, back and breaststroke, Ye was eight-tenths of a second behind USA's world champion, Elizabeth Beisel. And then, with 100m to go, something extraordinary happened. She swam her first 50m of freestyle in 29.25sec, and her second in 28.93. Those are just numbers, and mean little to those who do not study the sport. To put them in context, consider this: Ye was faster in the final 50m of her own 400m IM than Lochte was in his.

"Yeah, we were talking about that at dinner," Lochte said. "It is pretty impressive. She's fast. If she was there with me, she might have beat me." There's no might about it. Ye was 0.17 quicker over the final 50m of freestyle than the man many reckon to be the greatest all-round swimmer in the world. Beisel, Lochte's training partner, had no chance. She was two seconds slower over the final 50m.

It is the first time in history such a thing has happened. But it will not be the last. Ominously, Ye is certain she can get better still, and seeing as she is only 16, who can doubt her? "There's much room for improvement," she said. "It's true for breaststroke I am lagging behind but I think my freestyle result is also not that good. Usually I'm very bad at turning. This is one of my worst basic skills, but turning is a very important skill, therefore I was practising my turns before the competition." She says she is even better at the 200m IM, the event in which she won gold at the world championships in Shanghai last year, when she was 15.

Ye's team-mate Li Xuanxu took bronze and she is only 17 herself. She too came home in under 30 seconds, with a time of 29.77. The next best split was almost a second slower.

Then there was Sun Yang, 20, and also from Hangzhou. The world knew a little more about him, after he beat the longest-standing record in swimming at the world championships last year, taking 0.42 off the 1500m time set by the great Grant Hackett back in 2001.

Sun won the 800m in Shanghai, too. In London he has already won gold and set a new Olympic record in the 400m freestyle, beating South Korea's world and Olympic champion Park Tae-hwan. And on Sunday morning he was the fastest-qualifier in the heats of the 200m freestyle, pipping Lochte. It is entirely possible that Sun will sweep all the freestyle distances from 200m to 1500m.

China's success has prompted, with tedious predictability, dark mutterings about exactly how they are achieving it. Over the course of the 1990s they had 40 swimmers banned after positive doping tests. The sceptics ? or perhaps cynics ? would say that the doubts about Ye, Li and Sun are the inevitable consequence of that history.

There is, of course, no evidence to support such thoughts other than the talent and speed of the athletes themselves. Surely the success of this young generation stems from a legacy of a very different kind ? that of the Beijing Olympics. China has sent 49 swimmers to these Games, and 27 of them were born after 1990. On the women's side, there are eight who were born in 1995 or after. The country's success in the Aquatics Centre surely owes a lot to the investment in the sport made before the 2008 Games.

Their medals could also owe something to the unique talent identification system China uses to stream children into different sports. In his excellent 2003 profile of Yao Ming for the New Yorker, Pete Hessler, talks about how Chinese basketball players are selected strictly on the basis of their height and genealogy. "We go to the schools and look at the children's height, and then we check their parents' height," Hessler was told by one high school coach. "The method of early recruitment is a product of China's inability to provide every public school with coaches and sports facilities," Hessler wrote. "The system has proved effective in low-participation, routine-based sports like gymnastics and diving." And also, it seems, swimming.

Ye says she started swimming in 2003 because her "teacher spotted she had big hands". In swimming, where physique determines so much, the rather-rudimentary method of recruiting young athletes on the basis of their physical characteristics rather than their talent or inclination for the sport, appears to work well. It is coupled, of course, to an infamously fierce training programme, to the point where Ye was asked whether she resented being treated like a robot. "Of course not," she replied. "I think we have very good training, very scientific-based training, that's why we all have progressed."

An maintains North Korea's judo success

An Kum-Ae continued North Korea's fine record in Olympic women's judo by winning the under-52kg division on Sunday.

The 32-year-old went one better than last time out in Beijing as she beat Cuba's Yanet Bermoy in the final with a counter-attack in the sudden-death golden score period.

In winning gold she became the second North Korean woman after Kye Sun-Hui to claim an Olympic crown.

Kye beat Japanese legend Ryoko Tani (then Tamura) in the under-48kg final in Atlanta in 1996 when just 16.

"I'm following in the footsteps of the queen of North Korean judo and I wanted to honour her," said An.

"By winning gold I was able to reward my country for what I have been given by them. I learnt from Kye's strong spirit and determination."

For Bermoy, 25 and a former world champion, it was heartache again as she repeated her result as a 48kg fighter in China four years ago.

Once the dominant nation in women's judo, Cuba have not won Olympic gold since Sibelis Veranes (-70kg) and Legna Verdecia (-52kg) in Sydney.

They won three silvers in Beijing and Bermoy believes this latest medal shows they can be Games winners again.

"I'm very happy to have won a second silver medal but I really tried my best to get gold," she said.

"We've had Olympic champions before, we're working hard on getting more so don't lose hope, I think we'll get them."

Italy's Rosalba Forciniti and France's Priscilla Gneto won the bronze medals after beating Marie Muller of Luxembourg and Belgian veteran Ilse Heylen respectively.

An's most important bout came in the second round after she had ousted Britain's Sophie Cox.

She came up against world champion and second seed Misato Nakamura of Japan, who she had beaten in Beijing four years ago as well.

And this time, the Japanese was taken over backwards with a valley-drop (tani-otoshi) counter for a half-point waza-ari to again come up short.

She did hit back with an inner reap (ouchi-gari) that was originally awarded an equalising waza-ari before being downgraded to a minor yuko score.

That wasn't enough for the twice world champion and she was out.

Although Japan have the world champions in both the bottom two women's divisions, they failed to pick up any medals in either at the Games.

An qualified for the semi-final by beating Gneto by a penalty and then threw Forciniti for the maximum ippon (a technical knock-out) with a major outer sweep (o-soto-gari).

It was a competition that was full of shocks, with all four top seeds crashing out before the quarter-finals.

In fact An is only ranked 26th in the world, although that is in no small part due to North Korea competing in a limited number of international competitions.

Top seed Bundmaa Munkhbaatar beat Linouse Desravine of Haiti but was then pinned by Bermoy in the second round.

The Cuban beat Muller and the 35-year-old Heylen to reach the final.

Third seed Erika Miranda of Brazil submitted to a strangle against South Korean Kim Kyung-Ok in the second round while fourth seed Soraya Haddad of Algeria was disqualified in the first round for an illegal leg-grab on Andreea Chitu.

Mathematicians develop new method for describing extremely complicated shapes

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Mathematicians at the Institute for Advanced Study in New Jersey "bridged" topology and fractals and made a discovery that could lead to a new way of describing extremely complicated shapes such as the configuration of the tiniest defects in a metal or even the froth of a breaking wave.

Topology is a powerful branch of mathematics that looks at qualitative geometric properties such as the number of holes a geometric shape contains, while fractals are extremely complicated geometric shapes that appear similarly complicated even when viewed under a microscope of high magnification.

Bridging the topology and fractals, as described in the American Institute of Physics' Journal of Mathematical Physics (JMP), relies upon a recently developed mathematical theory, known as "persistent homology," which takes into account the sizes and number of holes in a geometric shape. The work described in JMP is a proof of concept based on fractals that have already been studied by other methods -- such as the shapes assumed by large polymer molecules as they twist or bend under random thermal fluctuation.

Many geometric structures with fractal-like complexity arise in nature, such as the configuration of defects in a metal or the froth of a breaking wave. Their geometry has important physical effects too, but until now we haven't had a vocabulary rich enough to adequately describe these and other complicated shapes. The mathematicians plan to use the vocabulary provided by persistent homology methods to investigate and describe complicated shapes in a whole new way.

Teleseminars | Writing and Speaking For Everyone - Rollins - Typepad

Telecourses or perhaps teleseminars are some of the best methods a data marketer offers with regard to developing great saleable content. But producing and saving a web seminar to convert in a training product, may be greater than a brand-new manufacturer is capable of. Which is unfortunate. Due to the fact making a telecourse or perhaps seminar is actually effortless ? should you choose it correct.

However , nearly all fresh producers do it incorrect!

In the event you listen to almost all of the experts, developing a telecourse or even teleseminar is not hard. Merely take a moment, start up your duplicate involving Ms powerpoint or even Keynote, then start itemizing out there what you need to convey. When you find yourself completed just sign on to your service provider, upload and begin chatting. Not a problem.

It?s no difficulty for them since that isn?t how they do it. They have got somebody else create this for them and they possess a teleprompter that feeds all of them what things to declare.

Nevertheless think about everyone else that has to create the goods we?re going to promote?

A single. Let enough time

If you think the particular gurus, it will lead you around an hour to prepare any one-hour web conferencing. Of course, they are underestimating terribly. Your Chapman Coalition review approximated that one hours associated with webinar will require about forty-three a long time associated with planning moment an average of. Even though your system pertaining to developing online seminars will affect the period, you ought to be happy to invest 1 week for every hr from the very first telecourse you generate.

2. Piece of software it out 1st

Among the techniques that well-experienced trainers depend upon will be the capability to fill-in information. A number of lines will give them adequate info in order to chat for a few minutes about them. And because they may be very well skilled, they could accomplish that together with handful of problems. They can additionally grab from which they left off once they carry out. Learning this kind of skill needs numerous years of exercise. Fortunately, new producers don?t need to depend on possessing kissed your Blarney Gemstone. There are lots of free of charge teleprompter programs available. Even so, one which just make use of them you have to produce a set of scripts. Writing down what you should state will save you the need to recover it as you go, makes it easier to recover and will allow you to concentrate on the method that you are saying the language rather than precisely what terms you?ll want to point out. It makes sense a greater high quality business presentation and a far more relaxed presenter.

Three or more. Test it 1st

Regardless of how long you?re delivering teleseminars and also telecourses, this often allows you put into practice. There exists a reason why expert famous actors run through regarding weeks prior to appearing around the stage. When coming up with the first telecourse maybe five-hundred and very first, you will find gonna be tough areas inside your very first programs. It?s inevitable. Only exercise will highlight wherever individuals tough spots are generally and provide you with the opportunity to modify all of them. Which can be another reason you must piece of software the telecourse. The software allows you to know that the updates are in reality staying incorporated over the following exercise. Understanding that it?s wise staying polished.

Network Marketing Battlefield: If You Think MLM is a Scam, Read This!

Mlm is a proven and effective work-from-home business model. Dependant upon if you?re ?in it?, ?been in it? or ?know someone that has?, your response to first reading that first sentence ? might induce a couple many different stomach reactions.

Individuals ?in it? are usually fanatically positive, and people who have tried Multi level marketing but not had great results or maybe listened to a tale regarding Uncle Bob wasting thousands, couldn?t hate it any more if they tried. A middle-ground viewpoint is more uncommon. I am a huge advocate of home-based business, such as Multi level marketing. As I see it, Multi-level marketing has a tendency to suffer adversely because of two cases of exaggeration:

Those people ?in it? convey testimonies of high income, high end standards of living, how their ?Compensation Plan? (the way in which money is made in Network Marketing) is the best in the industry, or how their products or services are the best on the planet. And, they?re possibly correct. You?ll find Network Marketing companies that have been around for decades and the truth is that businesses only last that long with good quality products and a solid business model where individuals succeed.

People against Multi-level marketing can at times be hell-bent on attempting to condemn the industry, stating (generally over-exaggerated) stories of friends scamming friends, individuals making no money or ?someone they knew? losing cash.

I hypothesize that the ?in its? err positively in their evaluation of the profession to overcome the pessimism from the ?not in its? and vica versa. The complete the fact is, like it or not, Network Marketing is actually a genuine and productive form of Home-based business. Sure, not every person makes cash. Some individuals aren?t in it for cash in the first place, but you?ll find small businesses owners and Franchisees, many that invest thousands and thousands of dollars for their businesses, that don?t generate profits. Or go bankrupt.

How is it that Franchisee A can create a enormous profit from the identical franchise system as Franchisee B, who ends in financial ruin? They?re using the same business model. What?s the sole variable? It?s the owner. Same deal with Multi-level marketing. Some people just don?t realize success at it. That?s just business. Mlm as a business model isn?t to blame.

Now, if you are in the ?not in it? group, that may be tough to take ? my apologies. Meanwhile, the ?in its? are clapping away at their computers at the moment. Go for it, tell ?em!

The ?In-its? vs. the ?Not-in-its?. What do you think?

Prior to thinking about network marketing any further, be sure to check out Holly and Greg Nunans home based business blog for more great tips and info.

Eight co-sponsors of ?audit the Fed? bill vote against it without explanation

The House of Representatives approved Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul?s ?Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2012? by a wide margin in a 327-98 vote Wednesday. But lost in the bipartisan revelry was the fact that eight co-sponsors of the legislation actually voted against it.

Spokesmen for each of these congressmen were contacted by The Daily Caller on Thursday, and none were keen on providing an explanation.

The bill would allow the Government Accountability Office to conduct a thorough audit of the Federal Reserve System, tremendously increasing transparency and accountability, in theory.

All House Republicans voted in favor of the bill, except for New York Rep. Bob Turner. Ninety-seven Democrats ? notably including the party?s House leadership ? voted against the bill, and 89 Democrats voted in favor.

The eight co-sponsors, all Democrats, that voted against their own legislation not only sponsored the 2012 bill, but each also co-sponsored its 2009 incarnation.

A spokesman for California Democratic Rep. Pete Stark merely informed TheDC, ?He did not release a statement,? and declined to explain his about-face.

Spokesmen for the other seven flip-floppers ? Lynn Woolsey of California, John Conyers of Michigan, Maurice Hinchey of New York, Jim McDermott of Washington, Marcy Kaptur of Ohio, Steven Rothman of New Jersey and Silvestre Reyes of Texas ? did not respond at all.

Woolsey, Hinchey, Reyes and Rothman are not running for re-election. Woolsey was one of eleven original co-sponsors of the 2009 version.

House opponents of the bill argued that it could result in the politicization of the Federal Reserve?s policymaking. ?Congress has rightly insulated the Fed from short-term political pressures,? said House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat. (SEE ALSO: Kucinich: Federal Reserve ?acts like it?s some kind of high exalted priesthood?)

The eight House Democrats who switched their stance on the issue without an explanation find themselves in good company, with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid also pulling off a mystifying pivot.

In 2010 and 1995, Reid boasted that he had tried in vain to pass legislation to audit the Fed. The Nevada senator, however, is now refusing to bring the bill, which would fulfill his self-professed yearning, to a Senate vote.

Like the eight congressmen, Reid has ignored requests for comment.

The 2012 Senate bill is sponsored by Ron Paul?s son, Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul, and is co-sponsored by 23 Republicans. The 2009 Senate version was introduced by Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders and was co-sponsored by several Democrats, including still-serving Democratic Sens. Barbara Boxer of California, Ben Cardin of Maryland, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Jim Webb of Virginia and Ron Wyden of Oregon.

Star-studded audience for Olympic opening ceremony

LONDON (AP) ? There will be monarchs, presidents, prime ministers ? and David Beckham. Friday's opening ceremony for the London Olympics is an A-list affair.

Among the 60,000 spectators at Olympic Stadium will be Queen Elizabeth II ? who as British head of state will officially open the games ? along with royals including Prince William and his wife Kate, and Prince Harry.

There's sure to be a sprinkling of showbiz royalty, too, with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, recently filming in Britain, the most often-cited names.

The British government says more than 80 heads of state and government will be in the audience, including royalty from Brunei, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.

The U.S. will be represented by first lady Michelle Obama and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney will also attend.

Beckham, who helped bring the games to London and is widely rumored to have a role in the ceremony, will be there, and British newspapers have speculated that boxing great Muhammad Ali may also be involved.

The show, a 27 million pound ($42 million) spectacular titled "Isles of Wonder," will end with a performance by Paul McCartney.

Every new coach wants to put his own stamp on a team.

Mike Mularkey apparently wants to imprint his with a sledge hammer.

The Jaguars coach told Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union he planned to fine players $10,000 if they talk about injuries to the media.

Mularkey delivered that news in last night?s team meeting.

?They saw a lot of numbers last night,? Mularkey said. ?One of them, it was up there more than once, was about speaking about injuries. [Head trainer]?Mike Ryan talked about it, I had it up there more than once. Coordinators were told prior to that meeting every two weeks, two to three weeks I want you to stand in front of that room and tell them we?re not going to talk about injuries.

?Even if mom says, ?How are you feeling?? If you tell you mom, go call coach Mularkey. I?m going overboard.?

Mularkey wasn?t totally serious about the fines for talking to parents, but apparently to everyone else.

?Anything I know about a guy, anything I know is hurting on him, any comment he makes will play into how they attack a team or a position,? Mularkey said. ?I just don?t think it?s anybody else?s business. ? If I feel like it?s going to jeopardize us or compromise us, I will not talk about specific injuries. Right now we?re really not in a position where I don?t feel free to talk about them because I feel pretty good about our team right now. But I will be the only voice.?

Listen, that?s fine to play tough guy. The Jaguars could use a little order (as long as it doesn?t come with Jack Del Rio?s ax).

But maybe, just maybe, they?d be better off getting their quarterback to quit looking so skittish in the pocket, or having Justin Blackmon call a cab, or trying to get their best player into camp on time.

Call me crazy, but I think any of those things might be more important to the Jaguars improving more so than making sure somebody doesn?t tell Vito Stellino their ankle hurts.

Drought taking heavy toll on fishing industry

(Reuters) - The drought and extreme heat wreaking havoc across the U.S. farm belt is killing fish by the thousands in lakes and rivers and could pose a problem to migrating ducks and other waterfowl if it stretches into the fall, officials said.

Authorities are tallying up the losses which could run into the millions of dollar as the worst drought in 56 years expands, devastating the corn and soybean crops and forcing ranchers to cull their herds due to scorched pasture.

"Nationwide we are talking tens of millions to hundreds of millions (of dollars in losses). It just depends upon how long it lasts and how widespread it becomes," said fisheries biologist Dan Stephenson of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

"If this drought persists into fall, when the duck and other waterfowl pass through on their way south, there could be a larger problem," Stephenson told Reuters.

In Iowa, losses were estimated at $10.1 million after 37,000 fish were found dead along a 42-mile stretch of the Des Moines River from the dam in Eldon to the Farmington Bridge in the northeast of the state.

"Temperatures were extremely high ... I mean 97 degrees (Fahrenheit; 36 Celsius) is essentially unheard of on this stretch of the river and it's certainly higher than anything I've ever seen," says fisheries biologist Mark Flammang of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Flammang said the majority of fish killed in Iowa were shovelnose sturgeon, with a value of $116.20 per lb based on guidelines from the American Fisheries Society.

After one of the mildest winters on record, the weather turned dry and temperatures began soaring into the triple-digit degrees Fahrenheit in the Midwest, which grows 75 percent of the country's corn and soybean crops.

Excessive heat arrived early for the game fishing industry, in June rather than the usual August to September. When June's record high temperatures burned through the Midwest, it was too late for the fishing industry to fix the problem.

"We install large pond and lake aeration systems to keep the water moving and oxygenated during stressful times, however the dilemma here is that these systems need to be installed in spring to start circulating water before the heat arrives," Nate Herman, owner of Herman Brothers Lake and Land Management Company in Peoria, Illinois, said. "Cooler water at the bottom needs to be mixed slowly before summer or you kill your fish yourself."

Fish are particularly susceptible to even subtle changes in their environments. Oxygen levels usually fluctuate during the day and night depending on temperature and other factors.

But the hot weather heated some waterways to between 85 and 90 degrees, forcing oxygen levels in the water down to a degree that caused fish to suffocate.

"The warmer the water, the less oxygen it can hold," said Herman.

Five parts per million of oxygen found in water is conducive to fish, three parts per million stresses them, and at two parts per million or less they start to die, he said.

The drought hit cool-water species of fish like black crappie, northern pike and walleye disproportionately harder as they are not accustomed to warm conditions.

NIST measurement advance could speed innovation in solar devices

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

A new versatile measurement system devised by researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) accurately and quickly measures the electric power output of solar energy devices, capabilities useful to researchers and manufacturers working to develop and make next-generation solar energy cells.

Innovative devices that convert sunlight to electric power more efficiently and cost effectively than the current generation of solar cell technology are the objects of a global pursuitmeans to reducing fossil-fuel consumption and to securing pole position in the competition for fast-growing international markets for clean energy sources.

As reported in the journal Applied Optics,* the NIST team has combined 32 LEDseach generating light from different segments of the solar spectrumand other off-the-shelf equipment with their custom-made technologies to build a system that measures the wavelength-dependent quantum efficiency of solar devices over a relatively large area.

Anticipated advantages over current approachesmost of which use incandescent lamps or xenon arc and other types of discharge lampsare greater speed and ease of operation, more uniform illumination, and a service life that is about 10 times longer.

The new NIST system for measuring spectral response easily accommodates two unique but complementary methods for determining how much electric current a solar, or photovoltaic (PV), device generates when hit by a standard amount of sunlight. Both methods are straightforward, and they use the same hardware setup.

With either method, the automated system produces measurements more rapidly than current instruments used to simulate solar radiation and characterize how efficiently a device converts light energy to electric energy.

One method, which activates the LED lights sequentially, is less subject to interference than the other technique, and yields a spectral response measurement in about 6 minutes. With the other method, all 32 LEDs are activated simultaneously, but each generates pulses of light at a different rate. The solar response of a PV device over the entire LED-blended spectrum can be determined in about 4 seconds.

Though more susceptible to interference, the faster method has potential for in-line manufacturing tests for ensuring quality, the researchers write.

The new system represents a major stride toward a technical goal set by a group of solar energy experts convened by NIST in late 2010.** "To accelerate all types of PV development and lower costs through more accurate assessment of performance," these experts set the goal to achieve spectral response measurements in fewer than 10 minutes.

While the new system beats the time requirement, the NIST team must push their technology further to match related targets that are part of the goal. Their to-do list includes matching or exceeding the energy intensity of the sun, broadening the LED-synthesized spectrum to include the infrared portion of the sun's output, and consistently achieving measurement results with uncertainties of less than 1 percent.

With their work to date, however, the NIST researchers have demonstrated that LEDs are now "technologically viable" for use in solar simulators and for characterizing PV and other photoelectric devices, says NIST physicist Behrang Hamadani.

Budgeting For Your Baby | Eumom's Blog

The?National Consumer Agency (NCA) today launched its ?My New Baby? online guide to help first-time parents financially plan ahead for their new arrival.

The NCA?s new guide comes as recent statistics from the ESRI show that Ireland has the highest birth rate in the E.U. with 75,600 births in 2010.

The ?My New Baby? guide contains information for new parents to help them organise their finances to prepare for their new arrival and ease the financial stress of a new baby.

Ann Fitzgerald, Chief Executive of the NCA explained

?Having a new baby is an exciting time for parents but, for many, their little bundle of joy will bring huge changes financially. First-time parents face a number of expensive once-off purchases before a baby arrives and there will also be ongoing costs, such as nappies and baby care products to consider. Some parents may see a change in their income depending on their maternity leave entitlements and their work situation.?

Parents may also need to budget for childcare costs depending on their work arrangements, which may have a big impact on their budget.

The NCA has produced the Baby Steps booklet, which helps parents make the most of their money, ease some of the financial pressures of family life and plan for the future. The booklet is available to download on?nca.ie?and contains information for parents in three stages:

* Planning for your baby?s arrival

* Money matters when you have children

* Planning for your children?s future

In addition to the ?My New Baby? guide, the NCA has lots of information for parents on personal finance, budgeting and managing your money including money saving tips available on?nca.ie.

Engage Your Most Uninspired Employees - Business Consulting Firm

Every team has them ? heck, every social circle has them ? the naysayers, the downers, the pessimists ? well, you know who I?m talking about, the people we don?t particularly enjoy. Now, some managers choose to leave these gloom-and-doom employees alone. But, I argue that taking another approach might work to your better advantage.

If your employees aren?t happy, inspired, or driven to come to work each day ? you have the opportunity to ignore their demeanor or identify their reasons. The reason that taking the latter approach is the better alternative for a manager is because although ignoring the employee is the easy route, it won?t get you or that employee any further in your endeavors toward success (and it won?t do the rest of your team any good either!).

Here are 3 tips to consider when contemplating how to involve your most uninspired employees.

1. Informally pursue one-on-one casual meetings with the employee.
The best way to break someone?s bad attitude is to build a relationship with him/her. You can?t expect to know every emotion (nor should you want to, for professional reasons) your employees have, but you can challenge yourself to care about the general well-being of your employees. If they are continually distressed, dissatisfied and distracted at work ? a sincere relationship with their manager might be the right medicine to engage their attention. Furthermore, once each of your reports has a relationship with you, each will have more skin in the game. And once people are personally invested in their team?s project or process, that?s when their engagement drives their excitement, which creates a positive, thriving work environment.

2. Intentionally plan team activities that revolve around team goals.
If you have a few employees who aren?t connected to the greater part of your team?s clan ? you can bet money that they probably aren?t collaborating with the majority of your team either. The more connected team members feel, the more collaborative they are. This doesn?t mean that every competitive streak has to be cancelled out ? no, no, no?not at all! In fact, just the opposite. Sometimes, a little healthy competitive match amongst team members is exactly what each individual needs to demonstrate his/her strengths in the right setting. Through this sort of event, you might just see how intertwined one?s personal confidence and one?s professional commitment are. The more opportunities you give your employees to feel good about themselves, the greater their commitment to your team will be.

3. Invest in establishing good communication skills.
I?m telling you now, if there?s one thing that everybody can benefit from ? it?s getting better at communication. So, stock up on some top-selling books that solidify your communication skills, collaborate with a few communication consultants and mirror your favorite mentors. The worst employees that are the least engaged feel isolated ? and the simplest way to engage them in the short term is to?talk to them! Sounds like common sense, right? Right. But, the problem is that most employees and managers avoid the cynics because they?re unpleasant. This strategy only perpetuates the cycle ? they simply get more alone, which gives them ample more reason to withdraw their attention to and association with the rest of the team. Stop the problem where it starts ? don?t hope it just suddenly goes away?because if that employee quits, your team (and you) have learned nothing.

As the old saying goes, ?No man is an island.? Now, you tell me: What?s your secret to involving the excluded employees?
